Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 246
البقرة · The Cow · verse 246 of 286
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ هَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِنْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ أَلَّا تُقَاتِلُوا قَالُوا وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نُقَاتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِنْ دِيَارِنَا وَأَبْنَائِنَا فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِنْهُمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ
Alam tara ila almalai min banee israeela min baAAdi moosa ith qaloo linabiyyin lahumu ibAAath lana malikan nuqatil fee sabeeli Allahi qala hal AAasaytum in kutiba AAalaykumu alqitalu alla tuqatiloo qaloo wama lana alla nuqatila fee sabeeli Allahi waqad okhrijna min diyarina waabnaina falamma kutiba AAalayhimu alqitalu tawallaw illa qaleelan minhum waAllahu AAaleemun bialththalimeena

Hilali & KhanHave you not thought about the group of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Musa When they said to a Prophet of theirs, "Appoint for us a king and we will fight in Allah's way." He said, "Would you then refrain from fighting, if fighting was prescribed for you" They said, "Why should we not fight in Allah's way while we have been driven out of our homes and our children (families have been taken as captives)" But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned away, all except a few of them. And Allah is All-Aware of the wrongdoers.

Ahsan ul Bayan (Junagarhi)کیا آپ نے (حضرت) موسیٰ کے بعد والی بنی اسرائیل کی جماعت کو نہیں دیکھا جب کہ انہوں نے اپنے پیغمبر سے کہا کہ کسی کو ہمارا بادشاه بنا دیجیئے تاکہ ہم اللہ کی راه میں جہاد کریں۔ پیغمبر نے کہا کہ ممکن ہے جہاد فرض ہوجانے کے بعد تم جہاد نہ کرو، انہوں نے کہا بھلا ہم اللہ کی راه میں جہاد کیوں نہ کریں گے؟ ہم تو اپنے گھروں سے اجاڑے گئے ہیں اور بچوں سے دور کردیئے گئے ہیں۔ پھر جب ان پر جہاد فرض ہوا تو سوائے تھوڑے سے لوگوں کے سب پھر گئے اور اللہ تعالیٰ ﻇالموں کو خوب جانتا ہے
