وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا اللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالُوا مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
Waith qalat ommatun minhum lima taAAithoona qawman Allahu muhlikuhum aw muAAaththibuhum AAathaban shadeedan qaloo maAAthiratan ila rabbikum walaAAallahum yattaqoona

Hilali & KhanAnd when a community among them said: "Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment" (The preachers) said: "In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah."

Ahsan ul Bayan (Junagarhi)اور جب کہ ان میں سے ایک جماعت نے یوں کہا کہ تم ایسے لوگوں کو کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو جن کو اللہ بالکل ہلاک کرنے واﻻ ہے یا ان کو سخت سزا دینے واﻻ ہے؟ انہو ں نے جواب دیا کہ تمہارے رب کے روبرو عذر کرنے کے لیے اور اس لیے کہ شاید یہ ڈر جائیں
